Weird!?
Alright, that last link will be a directory of horses with just plumb
unusual characteristics! They will likely be dominant genes, but surely won't
be homozygous - but for those of us who are fascinated with rare equine genetics
this "heterozygous" directory just has to be included !
Statement of Purpose: The purpose behind this
site is for education, information, networking and enjoyment. Riding and
using horse breeds are the primary focus. Homozygous traits of various genetic
traits are the main objective, but related genetic traits (appearing in
heterozygous forms) that are rare, unusual or interesting are also included
for education, comparison & enjoyment.
NOTES to Mare Owners using this site: If you
become interested in any horse on this site, pay close attention to whether
it is Homozygous or Heterozygous! Homozygous horses are often the focus,
but remember that Heterozygous horses are included in many of these directories!
Homozygous-Horses.com does not intend endorsement of
any horse listed in any directory on the site, and does not intend recommendation
of any stallion service or horses for sale. Usually color is only the fun
part, and a stallion or horse is selected for the whole package, including
much more compelling criteria. Good horsemen know that colors on a horse
are only "frosting on the cake" and mare owners should inform themselves
about conformation and athletic ability & temperament before selecting
a stallion of any color. In today's soft horse market however, color can
sometimes influence a sale over otherwise equal horses.
Photographs: Visited other websites with less
than satisfactory photographs of genetic color examples? We hope to provide
everything you want to see right here. High quality & informative photographs
are the objective. Horse photos featured on this website will predominately
be selected for high quality, showing accurate color, and featuring horses
with good conformation, and in flattering pose & perspective.
Search: To begin with we do not have a search
capability, so visitors must rely on browsing. When numbers of horses listed
on this site increase enough to warrant a search function, we may add that
then.
What horses will be listed? For the rarest of
dilutes, (and the weird!) we will include all horses in the directory listings
(both the heterozygous & the homozygous). The first & best photo
listings (since that is the point) may be included free.
(Email for more
information.)
For more common dilutes & traits, we will usually
list only the homozygous horses. If it is ridiculously common, we may list
only those horses that are submitted. As a prime example, for the Silver
Dapple dilute, we would list all homozygous stallions of the Rocky Mountain
breed, but would list both homozygous & heterozygous horses of other
breeds. We haven't decided if the homozygous agouti/bay directory would be
useful? We are not sure if homozygous sabinos can be identified? Maximum
sabinos would be interesting to list. So anyway, those directories are
probationary & subject to development over time.
For the redundant (e.g. nearly all Friesians are homozygous
black) it is not very useful to list these. Since so many homozygous tobiano
paint horses exist nowadays, we will list a few to get started and then rely
on readers' submissions to comprise this directory.
Mares are welcome in the rare category directories,
but may not be listed in the larger directories to reserve room for breeding
stallions. Also it is fairly impossible to know if a mare is homozygous for
traits that cannot yet be genetically tested for.
Grade horse submissions will be considered on a case
by case basis.
Also, remember that riding breeds are the focus of this
site. Miniatures are often very colorful, and could potentially take over
... and they are not riding horses, so are not a predominant focus of this
website. This is just a statement of intent, not something we'd get crabby
over, so if requested, we may include one here and there. Draft horses are
welcomed as they are using horses, and are often crossed for warmblood riding
horses.
Is it really homozygous? Did we miss any? Horses
thought to be homozygous for a trait and later shown not to be, may be removed
or identified as heterozygous. When neither phenotype nor genetic testing
can offer proof of homozygosity, foal crop records may be used. Genetic
statistics say that 12+ foals are a good indication of homozygosity. However,
over a lifetime of raising horses, I feel more confident trusting a stallion
is homozygous after 20+ foals. Stallions with numbers less than 20 may be
listed, but mare owners should make selections with understanding the odds.
The accuracy of whether a horse is homozygous for any particular genetic
color or trait is the sole responsibility of the owner and/or information
provided. "Homozygous-Horses.com" cannot be held liable for mistakes or
omissions. We will make every effort to provide accuracy and reasonable
completeness in most categories over time. We rely on submissions to help.
What if it is homozygous for multiple traits? If
a horse is homozygous for more than one trait, it may be listed in all applicable
directories.
Submissions: To submit a homozygous or rare dilute
(or weird) horse for listing in any directory on this website. You may submit
horses owned by other people. Contact information & email links are included
free. We reserve the right to refuse any submissions.
When submitting a horse for listing, please INCLUDE:
Trait (which directory?), Breed & Location! Include all trait(s)
directory/directories to list it in, breed and/or discipline, sex, name,
reg#, bloodline if applicable, year of birth, owner, contact information
(or at least the state/province/country), and you may include an email address.
Please indicate what the horse is homozygous for & how you know/think
it is homozygous. (The genetic test results, phenotype or foal crop records
- and if you are relying on foal crops, you must include foal numbers). Please
add its genetic color code (see below) if known. If you want a photo listing,
include photos of the horse, and remit $5. If you are interested in a photo
ad or display ad, see link below for more information.
Cost: These Directories are free for public use
and reference, and provide mare owners directories of stallions to select
from. Simple text listings in any of these directories are free. Free
listings may include contact information & email links, but not website
links.
Photo listings are $5 (this is a single 1-time fee)
for listing in these directories, and will help sponsor this free website.
The first few requests & submissions we receive for each category will
be listed free to get each directory started.
Advertising: For photo & display ad rates & technical
submission information please visit

- the info we have there will apply to this site as well. (If you do not
have a website and would like one for your horse, go

Changes/Updates: If you run across a listing
with a dead link or outdated information, please take a moment & let
me know. If you are an owner, and see a horse listed here you wish removed,
just email & we will
take it off immediatley.
Linking: You are welcome to link to this website.

not hotlink to any graphics on this site. We do not take requests for reciprocal
links, but will gladly accept submissions for including in directories. Horse

Email: with any
questions, comments, suggestions or requests. (Are there other traits you'd
like to see listed? Any changes or additions you'd like to see made?)
IMPORTANT: If you hear more current news or

Email so we can keep this information current! Thank you
very much for all your submissions & contributions - keep them coming!!
