Genetic discussion of dominant Curly gene horses:
Dominant gene Curly Horses come in all sizes, colors, body types &
disciplines. The distinctly calm temperament, substantive bone & durability
are the traits most prized among breeders. The fact that they are hypoallergenic
is an added bonus.
Curly Horses are one of the most mysterious & best
kept secrets of the equine world. Curly coated horses are hypoallergenic
for those who suffer from allergies to other horses. Dominant gene Curly
Horses also produce smooth-coated individuals, many of which interestingly
retain the hypoallergenic characteristic of their curly-coated parents.
Homozygous Curly horses of western bloodlines often
have scanty-haired manes & tails, referred to as extremes. Homozygous
Curly horses of western bloodlines that retain enough mane & tail hair
to remain attractive are highly regarded. Heterozygous Curly Horses are expected
to have normal haired (typically long & curly) tails. Homozygous Curly
horses of eastern (usually originated from gaited) bloodlines, retain full-haired
manes & tails.
Recessive curly genes also exist & pop up occasionally
among other equine breeds. The recessive horses have many of the same
characteristics of dominant gene Curly Horses. However it is the dominant
gene Curly Horses that are in breed evolution within their own right. The
dominant Curly gene isolation project is in progress within the International
Equine Genome Project.
Any foal with one dominant gene Curly coated parent
is eligible for registration in the North American Curly Horse Registry,
division of International Curly Horse Organization. Horse lovers who are
allergic to other breeds are discovering they can cross their favorite mare
to a homozygous Curly stallion for a registered foal sure to serve any purpose
or specialized discipline.
