Genetic discussion of grey white pattern gene horses:
All horses with a grey gene will eventually turn white (except for those
that get & keep a flea-bitten speckling pattern). Some grey slower or
faster than others. I had a filly born with 2 grey parents, and she turned
white very fast. I figured she was homozygous grey, but will do my research
first before I claim that is typical. Grey is a favorite color among many
cowboys, and is fancy in the sporthorse world. It is typically selected away
from among roan, paint, and appaloosa breeders, etc., since it will eventually
phenotypically overcome (whiten) the signature colors they are breeding
for.
I would like to display a set
of several photos of a single grey horse, from newborn foal to nearly white,
in high quality photographs, and of a good conformation horse. If you have
such a set of photos and wish to contribute them, please
email me.

Illusive Dancer - This outstanding
mare was first a very successful race horse, then a champion hunter, and
now a top-notch broodmare, producing premium-scoring foals from a variety
of stallions. She is a 16.3 hand gray registered with the American Warmblood
Society and the America Quarter Horse Association (an appendix mare who earned
her full papers). She received a premium score in her mare inspection and
is approved by ISR/Oldenburg N.A. She was 4th in the nation in 1996 with
the American Warmblood Society. Dancer has produced very high quality foals
from Holsteiner, Hanoverian and Registered Irish Draught stallions. We believe
that Dancer is a homozygous grey mare.

This is a registered AQHA palomino
filly I owned, photographed here at 1 year of age, and turning grey. (I assume
she is heterozygous). She started out a more typical palomino, but her points
began to darken out, as though preparing for turning grey later. An interesting
& beautiful color stage. She also showed the white spots that some grey
horses develop. I sold her to Merle Plain Feather who lives on the Crow
Reservation near Pryor, Montana. Donna,
