Lazy M Salty Blue (EE,aa,RnRn), 1993 homozygous blue roan stallion owned by Roans R Us, Elkmont AL. This stallion has produced over 160 roan foals. "Salty" piloted the Roan Zygosity test with UC Davis in Feb 2009 to identify classic roan homozygosity - that is now available to all classic roan horses. Salty is also homozygous for the black gene and carries no agouti (bay) gene. sire: Hancocks Blue Boy - dam: Valentines Blue.

Genetic discussion of true (or classic) roan gene in horses: The roan gene is more common in some breeds than others, and is non-existent in Arabians and Thoroughbreds. It has a characteristic solid legs and head, with roaning on the rest of its body. It may or may not be genetically linked to frosty roaning and probably(?) is not linked to the rabicano roan pattern (coontail). It is sometimes mixed up with grey horses, especially in identifying color when registering foals. There are many grey horses registered as roans, and roan horses registered as greys. The Jockey Club may refer to grey Thoroughbred horses as roans. Any color horse (including roan horses) can also inherit the grey gene & become grey. A grey horse will show white hairs on its face early in life. In roan horses, that are also grey, it can take as long as 3 years for those white facial hairs to appear.

He is producing foals with outstanding dispositions, and tremendous conformation. His first foals are just starting to hit the show ring and we are all expecting great success from them. 2006 Stud fee was $500.00. Call 402-480-5069 or email: jbarj@hotmail.com

A frosty roan. "Starlight Blue is our newest addition, a 5 year old true blue roan mare who has frosting to her roan pattern.. This makes her look more like a grey horse but neither of her parents carry the grey gene. You can see the extra roaning she carries in her face and legs. You can still see the black points, but again, she has more roaning there too. This mare will never turn white like a grey horse would, and she changes colors with the seasons like a true Roan does."
