Genetic discussion of Sabino gene horses: Pronounced "Sah-BEE-no."
Most recognizable in its heterozygous form. This gene is a paint or a white
pattern gene. It is often accompanied by "sabino roaning" as well as white
painted spots. Sabino roan is distinguished from classic roan in that a Sabino
roan will exhibit roaning on the head whereas classic / true roaning will
typically exhibit a solid dark-colored head. Sabino gene often causes
jagged edge socks, (often 4 socks) and look for a white lower-lip and/or
chin. The tobiano gene also commonly produces 4 white socks, especially when
manifested minimally, and can be confused with the sabino. The overo also
produces belly spots & may be accompanied by roaning, which makes it
difficult to distinguish from the sabino gene. There are multiple white pattern
genes which can make identification confusing.

Homozygous or Heterozygous
sabino? Perfection's Ivory Veil is a daughter of Toddy's Perfection. She
is a 1996 loud blue roan sabino. She is not gray as neither of her parents
were gray. At 15.2 hands she's a large well proportioned mare. She has an
easy going willing disposition. Ivy loads, stands for the farrier and has
excellent ground manners. Ivy is well broke and strives to please her rider.
She's suitable for an advanced beginner. She produces foals with good
disposition, natural gait and loud color. Ivy is priced at $4500 (sold).

Color Master is an unusual
homozygous black, maximum sabino Missouri Foxtrotter stallion with
great bloodlines, natural gaits, and a gentle, intelligent temperament with
spirit and flash. Color Master is a maximum sabino, the product
of breeding two sabinos together. We participated in a study at the University
of Kentucky to help identify the Sb1 gene that is one of the genes that causes
the sabino pattern. Color Master has been DNA tested as homozygous for
the Sb1 gene, so all of his offspring will get at least one copy of the
Sb1 gene and will be at least minimal sabinos.

| Sabino1 UC Davis CA Veterinary Genetics Laboratory discussion
of Sabino genetics & current genetic testing. Sabino is a generic description
for a group of similar white spotting patterns. The sabino pattern is described
as irregular spotting usually on the legs, belly and face, often with extensive
roaning. A mutation has recently been discovered that produces one type of
sabino pattern. It has been named Sabino1 as it is not present in all
sabino-patterned horses. More mutations will probably be identified that
account for other sabino patterns |
