Genetic discussion of Lp gene horses: The homozygous
spotted or LP gene horse can usually be identified (visually) by phenoytype.
An LP/lp (heterozygous) horse with PATN 1 will look like a full leopard horse,
spots all over. LP/LP with PATN 1 will look all white, a fewspot. Same with
the blanketed horses (I think they call that pattern PATN 2), they will either
be blanket with spots (heterozygous), or a snowcap w/ no spots (homozygous).
So a horse can carry the pattern genes and not LP and look like a solid colored
normal horse. Or an LP horse with no pattern genes will just have the white
scalera, striped hooves, and varnish roaning; no blanket.
I would like to display several
sets of photos of Appaloosa horses, from newborn foal to adult color, in
high quality photographs, and of good conformation horses, showing some of
the different roaning patterns & phases that these horses can go through.
If you have such a set of photos and wish to contribute them, please
email me.
